Tuxedos have a fascinating history. The following informative posts will give you a good accounting of men’s black-tie fashion.

Expanding Appeal

Remarkably, the greatest chapter in the history of evening wear – and arguably menswear in general – is the era marked by the Great Depression.  At a time of extreme financial hardship for so many, the wealthy elite maintained an after-six wardrobe that was not only elegant but sometimes downright decadent.  In 1935 a New York Herald Tribune society writer calculated that a “well-attired” New York gentleman’s evening kit could be worth as much as $4,975 once his jewelry and fur coat were accounted for, the equivalent of a staggering $80,000 today.  It was this glamorous lifestyle that Hollywood capitalized upon when catering to mainstream America’s desire for inexpensive escapism and in the process elevated the tailcoat and tuxedo to iconic status.  Keep reading at Black Tie Guide

This one is from Vanity Fair:

Soon after its “invention,” in 1886, the tuxedo became the ne plus ultra of formal male attire, and little has changed since. See more at Vanity Fair

The Blanco Wedding

Couple: Jefte and Noris Blanco

Wedding Date: May 23, 2015

Location: Deerpond Plantation, Charlotte, NC

The Wedding Dress: Maggie Sottero

Photography: Guillermo Ruiz

More Details: I wanted my wedding to feel like a fairytale, and it did. I loved my dress. It hugged me perfectly. It was simply beautiful — exactly what i wanted. I felt like Cinderella when I came down in the horse-drawn carriage. Our venue, Deerpond Plantation, was absolutely beautiful. We fell in love with it from day one. We both knew it had to be the place where we would receive our blessing. I wanted to feel like I was in a different place and the palm trees and pond made me feel I was somewhere else. We were so happy that our families traveled so far to be with us that special day, and that our closest friends made time to be there with us as well. We feel so blessed to have had our dream wedding.

The Covington Wedding

Couple: Matt and Vanessa Covington

Wedding Date: August 27, 2016

Location: Alexander Homestead, Charlotte, NC

The Wedding Dress: Maggie Sottero, style Mattea

Photography: MPA Weddings

More Details: I love the outdoors, color, texture and messiness. So, I incorporated the bright colors of summer into our ceremony and reception. I wanted the day to be festive and full of energy.

My dress was perfect. I loved the way it fit my body and it gave me room to breath and dance. I loved the romance of the lace, too. The casual style of the low back added a bit of sexiness that was just right.

Celebrating a Fresh & Fabulous New Year

Like we’ve said, getting married on New Year’s Eve enables you to maximize your sparkle quotient. Besides, what better way to start your new chapter as husband and wife than to correlate your wedding with the dawn of a brand new year. Many couples also enjoy the extra festivity that surrounds this magical time of year, since it brings a heightened sense of joy to everything.

Here’s an interview with Joanna and Dave, a Canadian couple who planned a New Year’s wedding “that no one would forget.”

Why did you choose New Year’s Eve?

We attended a New Year’s Eve wedding for a close family friend in Montreal two years earlier and it was a blast. Everyone was in a great mood, dressed to the nines and excited to begin the New Year on a high note. Over the last couple of years we’d also become de facto New Year’s party hosts, throwing last-minute soirĂ©es for everyone that hadn’t gotten around to making plans for the big night. We thought it would be nice to give our friends and family some advance notice and take the pressure off having to make plans themselves!

Did it make it more special to host your wedding on New Year’s?

A winter wedding itself is a special experience. All of the holiday decorations were still up, which lent the occasion an extra-magical feeling. And being the holidays, many of our friends and family from overseas and south of the border were able to make the trip to celebrate with us. Also, as it turns out, five of our guests were celebrating their birthday on NYE, including the mother of the groom, which was even more reason to celebrate.

Would you recommend couples consider December 31st for their wedding ?

Most definitely. While it can be difficult (and a little more expensive) to book a venue because you are competing with everyone who wants to throw a NYE party, it’s worth it to have everyone in such high spirits. Plus, we’ll never be guilty of forgetting our anniversary! Continue reading at The Wedding Co.
